Thanks John for the information! Good to know there's an explanation, though one has to wonder why FAA can't update their regulations to reflect the modern reality of all non-smoking flights..

You still find ashtrays on commercial airliners because they are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administraion, FAR 25.853(g): "Regardless of whether smoking is allowed in any other part of the airplane, lavatories must have self-contained, removable ashtrays located conspicuously on or near the entry side of each lavatory door, except that one ashtray may serve more than one lavatory door if the ashtray can be seen readily from the cabin side of each lavatory served".

Chris, thanks for the info. I didn't know of such a requirement.

Still, it'd be more fun if they had the perpetrator hold the illegal cigarette up and then put it out with a fire extinguisher ;)

Airlines in the US are required to still have ashtrays. The reason for this is that if someone should light up, there needs to be a safe place for a flight attendant to extinguish the cigarette. It would be hazardous to just put it out on the counter in the lav and toss it in the trash and hope it doesn't light the trash on fire.
