February, the supposedly coldest month of the year, is again past us. It hasn’t been much of a winter in terms of temperature as records show this has been the warmest winter in Finland ever – well, since accurate measurements began over 100 years ago anyway. While that may seem positive, it also means we haven’t had any snow to speak of in Helsinki and it’s been DARK. And I mean dark – bleak, grim and dark in ways you can’t imagine unless you’ve lived six months in the proverbial black box.
Anyhow, the lengthening days in March always bring some glimmer of hope to life again – the day is now getting longer by five and a half minutes each passing day and with each additional minute, one starts to realize that hey, I still have a pulse and I’m actually alive. The increasing light thus, psychologically anyway, launches the expectations of spring and summer and we can mark another winter as survived. In that spirit of things, here are a few photos from this winter. Click to enlarge.

Wow..
Very nice photos.
In France, there isn’t any winter..
It’s never cold, or sometimes maybe (with 0°C which is very cold for us) and there’s never snow, it’s so sad =)
beautiful photos!!! I especially love the 3rd, the grass in the wind with the bay/city backdrop. breathtaking!
interesting to think of a helsinki winter without snow, without the white ground to reflect the little bit of ambient light you do get. I hope you have some nice cheery indoor lighting.
