Dave Barry is one of my favorite columnists of all time, and I only recently discovered that he has written one fictitious novel also. I managed to find it from the local library and just finished reading it. As expected, it was a supremely funny book.
The plot is a little confusing, but basically it starts with two groups of people trying to kill people at the same place at the same time – others for real, others with a squirt gun to score points in a high-school game. Needless to say, these plans do not mix well and a lot of confusion and chaos ensues. Despite the book having a significant number of main characters with professions such as assassins, arms dealers, cops and random trigger-happy people, there are practically no murders. Which, of course, is one way of saying that a lot of the planning from the “bad guys” goes terribly wrong more than once.
While Barry’s writing style is one of tongue-firmly-in-cheek, there are many examples of things so close to the real world that it’s almost scary. One example, curiosly reminiscent of a certain real company, is a company called Penultimate of which the following introduction is given:
It specialized in government contracts, and it made spectacular profits. Penultimate’s formula for success was simple: aggressive management, strict employee discipline, and a relentless commitment to cheating. The company lied extravagantly about its technical qualifications, submitted absurdly unrealistic lowball bids to get contracts, and tacked on huge add-on charges. Penultimate was able to do these things because it paid excellent bribes to government officials.
At some 245 pages, Big Trouble is a quick and a very funny read. Definately recommended if you’re not put off by Barry’s style of humor.
Interesting plot, must have been fun to read.
Penultimate’s forumla is full-proof for success, yeah sometimes these descriptions are so close to real world, much like description about Vogon’s bureacracy in HitchHiker’s guide to Galaxy..
Oli tosiaan hauska page-turneri. Ei vain olisi kannattanut aloittaa lukemista kymmeneltä illalla, sotki pahasti vuorokausirytmin
