That sinking feeling

Some discoveries made when just walking around: (apologies for the crappy photo quality.. I need a new cameraphone)

This is theFujitsu-Siemens building in Helsinki – a reasonably new building too. And the ground next to it is just, I dunno, spontaneously caving in. There’s like a big cave under the steps and the front yard. Nice – not. I doubt these holes were intentional.

While it doesn’t look like there’s an imminent danger of the entire building caving in or something, it makes you wonder how shoddily things are really built. Recently interior ceilings have come crashing down in shops and swimming halls, sports halls partially collapsed and all kinds of nasty construction stuff has happened.

I thought the quality of buildings was supposed to go up as time passes and things develop, but it doesn’t quite seem like that. I wonder how many buildings built today are still going to be around in a hundred years or so. My guess is not many. And then for some reason Finland still collectively seems to feel like no other country can build anything. (And as if to prove my point, it rained in the cafeteria today. Yes there’s a roof. And the building is less than 5 years old.)

Another thing I bumped into, this one in downtown Helsinki, is the trash can on the left here. Someone added an appropriate text “Customer Feedback” to it. :D This is great, at least there is someone else who thinks that stuff isn’t taken very seriously here.

It’s now June 1st and it’s supposed to be summer. Summer means a sunny weather and at least relatively warm. Instead, it’s under +10C outside and raining! Did I ever say that I hate the Finnish climate? I hate it!
